Cara Drew

Cara Drew, MD

Program Director

About:

Dr. Drew is a 2009 graduate from Morningside College and 2014 graduate University of South Dakota Sanford School of medicine. She completed residency at the Siouxland Medical Education Foundation graduating in 2017. She served as Chief Resident from 2016-17. She joined the faculty at the Siouxland Medical Education Foundation immediately after completing residency.
She has a special interest in Diabetes Care and obstetrics, as well as promoting Team-Based Care to optimize outcomes for her patients.

Wolf Chris 2021

Chris Wolf, DO

Faculty

About:

Dr. Wolf completed his undergraduate degree in Physiology at the University of Iowa and is a graduate of Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his residency at Siouxland Medical Education Foundation, graduating in 2019. He joined the faculty after graduation.

Dr. Wolf holds special clinical interest in emergency medicine and sports medicine. Additionally, Dr. Wolf practices Osteopathic Manual Medicine, a hands-on approach to the treatment of many musculoskeletal complaints including back and neck pain.

Mike Jung

Michael Jung, MD

Medical Student Director

About:

Dr. Jung is a 1980 graduate of the University of South Dakota School of Medicine and a 1983 graduate of the Siouxland Medical Education Foundation residency program. He has been with the program since 1983 and was the Program Director from 1991 to 2000. Dr. Jung maintains active clinical, procedural, and teaching skills in all areas of Family Medicine.

He is a forensic child abuse investigator and he also has a special interest in maternal-child health issues. He has Clinical Associate Professor Appointments with the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine and the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine.

Betty Gilbert

Betty Gilbert, L.I.S.W.

Behavioral Scientist

About:

Betty Gilbert, L.I.S.W., received her Masters in Social Work from the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 1996. She received her Bachelors in Social Work from Briar Cliff University in 1994. She is a Licensed Independent Social Worker. She is a member with the National Association of Social Workers and the Association for Play Therapy. Betty joined the Behavioral Science faculty at Siouxland Medical Education Foundation in 2010.

Betty’s primary focus is with children and adolescents. Her therapy experience includes private practice, school social work, and psychiatric social work in a hospital setting. She has extensive experience providing services to foster and adoptive children and their families. Betty currently provides individual and family therapy primarily utilizing cognitive behavioral, play therapy and psychotherapy modalities. She holds an appointment with the University Of Iowa Carver College of Medicine as an Adjunct Instructor.

Amy Hammerstrom

Amy Hammerstrom, L.I.S.W.

Behavioral Scientist

About:

Amy Hammerstrom, L.I.S.W. received her Masters in Social Work from the University of Iowa in 2011. She is a Licensed Independent Social Worker and is also a member of the National Association of Social Workers. She worked in Child Welfare and the Juvenile Justice System for twenty years prior to joining the Behavioral Science faculty at the Siouxland Medical Education Foundation in 2017. Amy specializes in the use of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) for trauma recovery. She provides individual, marital and family therapy. She holds an appointment with the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine as an Adjunct Instructor.

Cindy Buys

Cindy Buys, Pharm. D.

Clinical Services Director

About:

Cindy Buys received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree in 1989 from Creighton University. She did a pharmacokinetics / infectious diseases fellowship at Millard Fillmore Hospital in Buffalo, New York. She has been on the professional staff at the Family Medicine Center since 1991. Dr. Buys is certified by the Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties as an Ambulatory Care Pharmacotherapy Specialist.

Current research interests included Team-Based care in the treatment of chronic diseases. She is an Adjunct Associate Professor (Clinical) with the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy and University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine.

Sara Wiedenfeld

Sara Wiedenfeld, Pharm. D.

Clinical Pharmacist

About:

Sara Wiedenfeld received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree in 2007 from Drake University. She completed a pharmacy residency at Siouxland Medical Education Foundation. She joined the faculty at SMEF in 2014. Prior to joining SMEF, she worked as a clinical pharmacist at Mercy Medical Center-Sioux City. Dr. Wiedenfeld is a certified by the Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties as a Pharmacotherapy Specialist. She is an Assistant Professor (Clinical) with the University of Iowa, College of Pharmacy.

Dr. Wiedenfeld received the Siouxland Medical Education Foundation’s Faculty of the Year award in 2018. Her practice interests include preventative care, wellness, and women’s health.

Gary Heath

Gary Heath, PA-C

Physician Assistant

About:

Gary Heath completed his Physician Assistant training at the University of North Dakota in 1992. He was previously employed by St. Luke's Regional Medical Center and Marian Health Center. He joined the Family Medicine Center staff in 1993.

Valery Tran

Valery Tran, M.D.

About:

Dr. Tran is a 2019 graduate of the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Medicine. He completed his Family Medicine residency at Siouxland Medical Education Foundation in 2022, serving as Chief Resident from 2021-2022 and joined the faculty after graduation.

In addition to full-spectrum Family Medicine care including women's health and pediatrics, Dr. Tran holds special clinical interest in holistic mental health, end-of-life care, and palliative care medicine.
